Re: Guadalcanal DFC

Hello, Ian!

Guadalcanal is well covered in the secondary literature.  Much of it (such as official histories) is available on line, and the rest can be found in libraries and the used book market.

Making a DFC requires looking at a particular problem from the point of view of a particular person.  That is, a good DFC would not be "air power at Gaudalcanal" but "Squadron Leader Kiwi of the Royal New Zealand Air Force on 2 November, 1942."  (I made up the person and date.)

To find such events, good places to start are:

1.  memoirs
2.  official histories of organizations that employed forces of modest size in that organization

The benefit to official histories that deal with modest size forces is that they are likely to look at things from the point of view of individual decision makers.  This is even more true of memoirs.
